Developing Resilience

Pessimism arrow Optimism

Optimism is the foundation of courage.
- Quoted by Teresa McCafferty and Claire Simpson, Monifieth High School

When things are not going well, it can be tempting to complain, blame, or criticize others. This just makes things worse. On the other hand, being kind, considerate, and understanding lends support. We can listen with compassion, then speak with consideration - from a position of humility, unlimited love, and enlarged perspective.
In When Bad Things Happen to Good People, Rabbi Harold Kushner wrote about perspective.

Do we need to raise our sights?
Worry can become a habit that tricks us into believing we are taking active steps to resolve a problem. Worrying wastes valuable time that we could used for finding ways to resolve a challenging situation.
When a crisis occurs, like a severe illness or a career setback, we can choose how to handle the experience. These events can be like mountains and hills that divert a river causing it to twist and turn, yet still leading it to the sea.

Crises as opportunities
The benefit of a crisis or difficulty is that it makes us focus on what really matters. However, we can pause and assess our values and priorities at any time. Any time is a good time to fulfil our deepest purpose.
