An ounce of loyalty is worth a pound of cleverness. - Elbert Hubbard

How can we be loyal in our relationships with other people? Relationships form the spiritual web of our lives, with crucial strands including family, friends and schoolmates. Our deepest values are often expressed through these essential bonds of loyalty.

Relationships can also be a training ground for loyalty. Being human is an accomplishment like playing an instrument, observed essayist Michael Ignatieff. It takes practice.

Life is set up to present the situations and experiences that can help us grow and mature. How does this happen? Sometimes, what we see in others is a reflection of something in ourselves. Perhaps the thing we most admire in another may be a quality we possess ourselves - and what most irritates us in others is also found in ourselves!
