Assessment

A common thread in feedback from teachers about the programme is the need to differentiate the work undertaken by students at various levels. To reflect this, the programme is making a phased transition from an age based activity to an assessment based activity and is providing teachers with the tools they need to assess their students.

It's up to you...

It is up to you to decide how to use the values poster resource within your school and we recognise it is used in different contexts and subject areas across the secondary education sector. With this in mind we have developed an optional learning framework to support teachers from any discipline to develop the values poster programme into an effective and sustainable activity which meets the required learning outcomes of their course. However, bear in mind that, in regions which offer Regional Awards the framework will be used to support the judging and awarding process .

Learning framework...

The learning framework outlines three levels of difficultly and provides a mechanism to position, differentiate and assess a students work. The framework is based on the first five Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) levels and encompasses a range of assessment indicators common to Access 1 through to Credit Standard Grade. This makes the framework ideally suited for use with S1-S4 students or equivalent in Scotland and Y8-Y11 in other parts of the UK.

Recommended Approach to Assessment...

  1. Read the Learning Framework
  2. Decide which Level to operate with your pupils
  3. Decide whether to apply for Dynamic Youth Award Accreditation
  4. Decide on your marking strategy (see below)
  5. Submit best 3 posters in each class to the national awards (where available)

Marking Strategy...

Our initial feedback from teachers has been very positive about the new framework but it does present the challenge of having to individually mark every poster completed against the level descriptors in the framework. To make this as easy as possible we have attached a simple form at the back of the framework document to record and manage your marking for each class.

save time you might choose to do a first sift of the completed posters and then mark the best ones in order to find the top three for submission to the regional awards.
